Does Prolonged Non-Gelling of Mold Gel Coats Cause Wrinkling?
Yes, it does.
To achieve lower pinhole and bubble rates, mold gel coats typically require multiple spray or brush applications. Insufficient curing agent or low curing temperatures can prolong the non-gelling of gel coats, increasing the likelihood of swelling between layers and resulting in wrinkling issues. To mitigate this risk, ensure curing agent (MEKP) levels are not below 1.5% and maintain operational temperatures above 15°C. When necessary, accelerating curing through temperature control (maintained at 40-60°C) can expedite mold gel coat curing.
