How does the vacuum infusion process work?
The Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP) is a closed-mold manufacturing technique used to create high-performance composite parts with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
Here is how the vacuum infusion process works:
- Preparation: Dry reinforcement materials (like fiberglass or carbon fiber) are laid into a prepared mold.
- Sealing: A flexible vacuum bag is placed over the materials and sealed tightly against the mold edges.
- Vacuum Application: A vacuum pump removes the air from inside the bag, compressing the dry reinforcement.
- Resin Infusion: Liquid resin is introduced through inlet tubes. The vacuum pressure draws the resin through the dry fibers, thoroughly impregnating them.
- Curing: Once the fibers are fully saturated, the resin cures at room or elevated temperatures before the part is demolded.
This process reduces emissions, minimizes resin waste, and creates lighter, stronger parts compared to traditional hand lay-up methods.
